1. Princess Nora's pick: Pinot Noir
Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2024
Martinborough, New Zealand
Princess Nora says: "A princess of Burgundy, bottled on the other side of the world. I travel more than people think, and New Zealand suits me because I prefer cooler weather. Ata Rangi is a family-owned winery founded in 1980. Crimson smells of delicate wild berry and rosehip, and is light and crisp to taste. Elegant, like someone you know."
Pairs with: Roast pork belly, mushroom pasta, or a cheese platter

2. Charlie's pick: Chardonnay
Georges Duboeuf Cuvée Prestige Saint-Véran 2022
Saint-Véran, Burgundy, France
Charlie says: "This one is from my homeland. Saint-Véran sits in the southern part of Burgundy, and the bottle is full of pear, white peach and honey, with a little vanilla at the end. It reminds me of a pear tart cooling on the counter."
Pairs with: Roast chicken, seafood risotto, or a soft cheese platter

3. Gaby's pick: Gamay
Domaine de Grand Croix Brouilly 2022
Brouilly, Beaujolais, France
Gaby says: "No travelling for me. I stayed home in Beaujolais for this one. Brouilly is one of the ten superstar villages here, and this bottle is all raspberry and strawberry with a touch of blackcurrant, from vines that are 60 years old."
Pairs with: Roast chicken, grilled sausages, or a simple cheese board

4. Pier Giorgio's pick: Pinot Gris
Amisfield Pinot Gris 2023
Central Otago, New Zealand
Pier Giorgio says: "I was born in France and I live in Italy, so of course my bottle comes from New Zealand. I do get around. The label says Pinot Gris, not Pinot Grigio, which tells you this is my more sophisticated French side. Amisfield describes its Pinot Gris as fresh and vibrant, with apple, pear and quince. Pour me right after the bubbles."
Pairs with: Roast chicken, roast pork, or creamy pasta

5. The bonus bottle: Champagne
Billecart-Salmon Brut Réserve NV
Champagne, France
Nora and Charlie say: "This is our bottle. Whenever we catch up, it is over Champagne, because Champagne is what happens when Pinot Noir and Chardonnay get together, with Pinot Meunier joining in. Billecart-Salmon has been family-owned since 1818. Expect a creamy, smooth sparkling wine with pear, pastry and honey. Open this one first."
Pairs with: Oysters, sushi, or simply on its own
How to taste the box
You don't need to open all five at once. But if you have friends over, pour them in this order: bubbles first, then whites, then reds.
