Chenin Blanc
The Versatile Mr. South Africa
Meet Chike, known as Mr. South Africa. He’s one of the most versatile characters in the Village: a pastry chef, a pianist, a singer, and a basketball player, all at once. He’s got a sweet tooth, dresses with quiet elegance, and somehow gets more charming with age.
In wine terms? Chike is Chenin Blanc, one of the most versatile white wine grapes in the world.
Chenin Blanc got its start in the Loire Valley in France, but it found its true home in South Africa, where it’s the most widely planted grape of all and goes by a local name, Steen.
Expect a medium-light white with high acidity that can go almost anywhere: bone dry, off dry, lusciously sweet, or even sparkling. In the glass, Chenin Blanc ranges from pale straw to pale amber, depending on how it’s made. You’ll pick up quince, apple and pear with honey and chamomile notes.
South Africa is Chike’s home turf, but he shows up all over the world too, especially back in the Loire Valley, where it’s originally from.
Chenin Blanc can stand on its own as a single varietal, or blend well with other white grapes for extra body and texture.
Now let’s find you some bottles he’d actually approve of.

1. Great value-for-money
Corymbia : Chenin Blanc (Organic) 2024
Swan Valley, Australia | $50 / bottle
Chike says: "Chenin Blanc isn’t only grown in South Africa, you know. This organic bottle from Swan Valley is crisp and citrusy, with a hint of smokiness and a dry, textured finish. Erin Larkin at Wine Advocate gave it 93 points. Good quality and gentle on the wallet."
Pairs with: Grilled prawns, roast chicken, or a soft cheese board
2. For a proper taste of home
Nederburg Heritage Anchorman Chenin Blanc
Paarl, South Africa | $55 / bottle
Chike says: "This is what real South African Chenin Blanc tastes like. Old bush vines in Paarl and Darling give you ripe apricot, nectarine, floral hints, and a touch of spice. Decanter scored it 91 points, it picked up a Gold at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards, and Platter's gave it 4.5 stars. If you want a proper taste of my hometown, this is the one to go for."
Pairs with: Roast pork, grilled fish, or aged cheddar
